Restore Strength, Function & Performance

A pectoralis major tendon tear is a serious injury that can significantly affect upper body strength, shoulder stability, and athletic performance. Most commonly occurring during weightlifting or explosive athletic activity, these injuries can make pushing, lifting, and daily movements painful and difficult.

Our practice specializes in advanced diagnosis and surgical treatment of pectoralis major tendon injuries using modern repair techniques designed to restore strength, function, and confidence. Whether you are an athlete, active adult, or fitness enthusiast, our goal is to help you safely return to the activities you enjoy.

Understanding the Pectoralis Major Tendon

The pectoralis major is the large chest muscle responsible for many upper body movements, including:

  • Pushing
  • Bench pressing
  • Lifting
  • Rotating the arm inward
  • Stabilizing the shoulder

The pectoralis tendon attaches the chest muscle to the upper arm bone (humerus). When excessive force is placed on the tendon—especially during heavy resistance training—the tendon can partially or completely tear away from the bone.

Pectoralis major injuries most commonly occur in men between the ages of 20–50 and are frequently associated with weightlifting activities such as the bench press.

Common Symptoms of a Pectoralis Injury

Symptoms may range from mild discomfort to severe pain and weakness depending on the severity of the injury.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden pain in the chest or front of the shoulder
  • A tearing or popping sensation during injury
  • Bruising along the chest, upper arm, or armpit
  • Weakness with pushing or lifting movements
  • Loss of chest contour or asymmetry
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Difficulty returning to sports or workouts

Complete tendon tears often result in noticeable weakness and cosmetic deformity.

What To Expect

Evaluation & Diagnosis

Your visit begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine the source of your knee pain. This may include a physical examination, imaging (such as X-rays or MRI), and movement testing to accurately diagnose your condition and understand its severity.

Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on your diagnosis, we develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals. Options may include non-surgical care such as physical therapy, bracing, or injections, or surgical intervention when necessary. If surgery is recommended, we’ll walk you through the procedure, recovery, and expected outcomes.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Recovery is guided and structured to help you regain strength, mobility, and confidence. Depending on your treatment, this may include physical therapy, progressive strengthening, and a staged return to daily activities or sports. Our team supports you throughout the entire healing process to optimize long-term results.

We believe orthopedic care should never be one-size-fits-all. Every treatment plan is built around your anatomy and injury pattern, your activity level and lifestyle goals, your short- and long-term recovery needs, and a focus on optimizing healing and outcomes. Our team-based surgical approach also allows for increased precision, reduced operative time, and improved recovery experience in appropriate cases.
