Restore Strength, Stability & Performance
Hamstring injuries can significantly impact mobility, athletic performance, and everyday movement. Whether caused by sports, explosive movement, overuse, or trauma, severe hamstring injuries can lead to ongoing pain, weakness, instability, and difficulty returning to activity if left untreated.
Our practice specializes in advanced diagnosis and treatment of hamstring tendon injuries, including minimally invasive and endoscopic hamstring repair techniques. Our goal is to relieve pain, restore function, and help patients safely return to work, exercise, and sports performance.
Understanding the Hamstring Tendons
The hamstrings are a group of three large muscles located along the back of the thigh:
- Semitendinosus
- Semimembranosus
- Biceps femoris
These muscles originate at the pelvis and extend down the thigh, crossing behind the knee and attaching to the lower leg bones through tendons. The hamstrings play a critical role in:
- Extending the hip
- Bending the knee
- Stabilizing movement and athletic performance
- Supporting balance between the hamstrings and quadriceps muscle groups
When the hamstring muscles or tendons become overstretched or torn, pain, weakness, and loss of function can occur.
Common Symptoms of a Hamstring Injury
Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the injury and may include:
- Sharp pain in the back of the thigh or buttock area
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
- Pain while sitting
- Swelling or bruising
- Hamstring weakness
- Muscle cramping or spasms
- Difficulty straightening the leg
- Audible “pop” at the time of injury
- A balled-up appearance of the muscle in severe tears
Early evaluation is important to prevent worsening injury and long-term complications.
What To Expect
Evaluation & Diagnosis
Your visit begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine the source of your knee pain. This may include a physical examination, imaging (such as X-rays or MRI), and movement testing to accurately diagnose your condition and understand its severity.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your diagnosis, we develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals. Options may include non-surgical care such as physical therapy, bracing, or injections, or surgical intervention when necessary. If surgery is recommended, we’ll walk you through the procedure, recovery, and expected outcomes.
Recovery & Rehabilitation
Recovery is guided and structured to help you regain strength, mobility, and confidence. Depending on your treatment, this may include physical therapy, progressive strengthening, and a staged return to daily activities or sports. Our team supports you throughout the entire healing process to optimize long-term results.
We believe orthopedic care should never be one-size-fits-all. Every treatment plan is built around your anatomy and injury pattern, your activity level and lifestyle goals, your short- and long-term recovery needs, and a focus on optimizing healing and outcomes. Our team-based surgical approach also allows for increased precision, reduced operative time, and improved recovery experience in appropriate cases.
